Pieterskerk Leiden

Join Hans Langh, private tour guide and driver to the Pieterskerk Leiden. Once home of the American pilgrim fathers predecessors.

Pieterskerk in Leiden:

Keys of Saint Peter:

The Pieterskerk Leiden was built in 1121. The Pieterskerk is the oldest church in Leiden and holds a rich history. The church is a highlight of Leiden. Named after Saint Peter, the church celebrates the city’s patron saint. Connecting to Leiden’s nickname as the “key city.” This is based on Jesus’ words to Saint Peter: “I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven.” Saint Peter’s keys also appear on the city’s coat of arms.

American Pilgrim Fathers in Leiden:

Pieterskerk is well-known as the place where the American Pilgrim Fathers prayed. Before they left for the New World. This is making it an important site for both Dutch and American history. Additionally, many professors from Leiden University, one of the oldest universities in the Netherlands, are buried here. Among the most famous graves are Jan Steen, the celebrated Dutch painter. And Herman Boerhaave, a pioneering scientist and physician known as the founder of clinical teaching.

Leiden’s history:

Another historic church in Leiden is the Hooglandse Kerk. This impressive late Gothic church is shaped like a cross. It is known for its grand, beautiful interior. Built in the 14th century, it also played a practical role for the community. The large roof of Hooglandse Kerk collected rainwater, which was stored in reservoirs. The rainwater provided a vital supply of fresh water to the people of Leiden.
Together, Pieterskerk and Hooglandse Kerk showcase Leiden’s history. Combining religion, art, and community care in these two iconic buildings.

For travellers passionate about Dutch and American history, the Pieterskerk in Leiden is a true gem. On my Leiden tour, we make a stop at this extraordinary church, where you can explore the history of the American Pilgrim Fathers. Get more information about the private tour now!

Escher Museum in The Hague:

Optical illusions M.C. Escher

The Escher Museum in The Hague is located in the former Winter Palace of Queen Emma. It showcases the work of M.C. Escher. Known for his amazing optical illusions and creative use of perspective. With 130 works on display, you can see almost his entire collection.

M.C. Escher:

In addition to Escher’s famous prints, the museum also shows his early works. Like Italian landscapes, still lives, and studies of Arabic mosaics. His art is known for its symmetrical and mathematical patterns. They change into new shapes, creating impossible structures like infinite stairways.
Escher was inspired by his travels, especially in Italy and Spain. Here he studied Islamic mosaics. His work combines geometry and art in unique ways that play with the viewer’s perception.

Dutch queens:

The palace itself has historical importance. It was used by Dutch queens, including Emma, Wilhelmina, Juliana, and Beatrix. From 1896 to 1991. At Queen Juliana’s request, it was turned into a museum. Thus allowing visitors to enjoy both Escher’s art and the palace’s royal history.

Allow me to show you the museums of the Hague! The Escher Museum shows amazing optical illusions that you may never have seen before. It will be on a private, personalised tour.

City Hall Leiden

City Hall in Leiden:

Dutch Renaissance facade:

Leiden’s City Hall, or Stadhuis van Leiden, is a historic gem. Located on Breestraat the city’s main street. The City Hall is known for its beautiful Dutch Renaissance facade. The facade showcases intricate decorations, stone reliefs, and balanced symmetry that have drawn admiration for centuries. Much of it was rebuilt after a fire in 1929. But the City Hall still embodies Leiden’s history and resilience.

End of the Spanish siege celebrated with herring and white bread:

To the left of the main entrance is the Roepstoel, or ‘Calling Chair’. This spot is where, in 1574, the end of the Spanish siege was joyfully announced. During the Eighty Years’ War, Spanish troops surrounded Leiden for 129 grueling days. Leaving the city’s people starving and struggling. A 129 letter poem on a nearby plaque tells the story of those difficult days and celebrates their survival. The siege finally ended on the 3rd of October, 1574. That day Dutch forces arrived with boats carrying herring and white bread to feed the people. Today, the citizens of Leiden still celebrate this event. Known as Leidens Ontzet or ‘Relief of Leiden’. Traditional herring and white bread is being served each October 3rd.

De Waag Leiden:

Close to City Hall, you’ll find De Waag, a lovely 17th-century building. It is the Waag, once used for weighing goods. A crucial part of the city’s thriving trade during the Dutch Golden Age. De Waag’s elegant stone facade is a reminder of Leiden’s rich history as a bustling market city. Behind it is the Boterhal, a building historically used for trading dairy products. This still plays a role in Leiden’s lively market culture.

Koornbrug grain trading:

Also nearby is the Koornbrug, a picturesque 17th-century bridge that spans the Nieuwe Rijn canal. With its unique arched roof, the bridge was built to keep grain shipments dry in bad weather. Showcasing Leiden’s importance in grain trading. The Koornbrug offers beautiful views of the canal and surrounding historic buildings. Capturing the charming essence of Leiden’s waterfront.

Frans Hals Museum Haarlem:

Fourteen Frans Hals paintings:

Frans Hals Museum Haarlem has the largest collection of Frans Hals paintings in the world.
It is a former ‘old men’s house’ built in 1608.
There are fourteen paintings of his hand on display, including his famous civic guard paintings.
Due to religious persecution during the Eighty Years’ War, Frans Hals came to Haarlem as one of the many Flemish refugees.

Frans Hals famous portrait painter:

Frans Hals (1582-1666) became one of the most famous portrait painters of his time. Among his greatest works are the portraits of the militia’s, similar to Rembrandt’s works.
He was able to suggest movement and detail with a single, rough stroke of the brush, and because of his special use of colours. He is sometimes referred to as ‘the first impressionist’. Vincent van Gogh admired his modernist style.
The main location of the Frans Hals Museum is in the former old men’s house.

Grote Markt second location:

The second location, the ‘Hal’ of the Frans Hals Museum, is on the Grote Markt. It is a striking building with a rich history. Important to know is that it is basically the contemporary art wing of it with a couple of special exhibitions. No works of Frans Hals.
In the past it was a meat hall, a fish market, a gentlemen’s club and now a museum. The building is adorned with bulls heads. Highlight of the Dutch renaissance. The main location of the Frans Hals Museum is in the former old men’s house.

Holland America Line in Rotterdam:

A key part of the museum’s collection is its models of famous Dutch passenger ships. Like those from Koninklijke Nedlloyd and the Holland America Line. These models show the important role Dutch ships played in global travel and trade. The story of the Holland America Line is especially interesting. Though it was originally planned for Amsterdam, the company was eventually founded in Rotterdam in 1872, where it found success. The first Holland America Line ship sailed from Rotterdam to New York on October 15, 1872. Establishing an important link across the Atlantic. Though the company became fully American-owned in 1989, its Dutch roots remain a proud part of Rotterdam’s history.
