Christ’s sacrifice:

The central theme of the altarpiece is the “Adoration of the Mystic Lamb”. Where a lamb symbolises Christ’s sacrifice for humanity. This central image is surrounded by panels showing saints, angels, and historical figures. All painted with lifelike precision that was revolutionary for the time. The Van Eyck brothers used oil paints in a way that created vibrant colours and textures. A new level of realism that inspired many artists in the years that followed.

Theft and mystery:

Despite many investigations, this panel has never been recovered, and the original is still missing. Today, a reproduction stands in its place.
