Beyond the Bloom: the Tulip Fields Tour Holland
The “Kitchen Garden” Legacy
The name Keukenhof literally translates to “Kitchen Garden.” Dating back to the 15th century, these grounds provided herbs and game for the kitchen of Countess Jacoba van Beieren’s castle. Today, while the herbs have been replaced by millions of tulips, the estate’s historic soul remains. You can still visit the 17th-century Castle Keukenhof just across the road, which offers a quieter, more classical look at Dutch manor life.
Keukenhof means 32 hectares of themed gardens featuring seven million hand-planted flowers and breathtaking floral art.
Exclusive Flower Pavilions give access to the Orchid & Anthurium House, the world-famous Lily Show, and the Historical Tulip Exhibition.
The Art of “Lasagna Planting”
Ever wonder how the gardens stay perfectly in bloom for eight straight weeks? The secret is a Dutch technique called “Lasagna Planting.” Gardeners plant bulbs in multiple layers: the latest-blooming tulips at the bottom, mid-season varieties in the middle, and early crocuses or daffodils at the top. As one layer fades, the next pushes through, creating a continuous, evolving masterpiece from March to May. Learn all about it at Hans Langh’s Holland flower tour.
The Working Bollenstreek (Bulb Region)
While Keukenhof is a curated showcase, the surrounding Bollenstreek is a high-tech agricultural hub.
The “Heading” Process: In late April, you might see farmers “heading” the tulips—cutting the flower heads off while they are still vibrant. It looks heartbreaking, but it’s a vital step: it forces the plant’s energy back into the bulb rather than the seed, ensuring the high-quality bulbs that Holland exports worldwide.
The “Insider” Story we give by learning the history of Dutch floriculture and meet local growers to hear the stories behind the craft.
The Windmill View and Beyond:
The iconic 1892 Keukenhof Windmill isn’t just for show. Climb to its gallery for a panoramic “border-to-border” view where the manicured park meets the raw, striped geometry of the industrial flower fields.
Beyond the Gates we’ll enjoy a scenic drive through the surrounding bulb-growing region—places the big tour buses can’t easily reach.
Picture-Perfect Stops: We’ll stop at the best vantage points for photos of vibrant fields set against iconic Dutch windmills. It is Your Customisable Itinerary.
