On the north side of Dam Square is the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), from the 14th century.
In the six centuries that the church has been on this site, it has been through a lot. A tower that was never built, the adventures of our VOC admirals, the inauguration of King Willem Alexander and Máxima, a major fire and of course the Beeldenstorm, the time of iconoclasm.
Many Dutch writers have been honored with memorial stones, such as Joost van den Vondel, Multatuli and P.C. Hooft.
The Dutch Kings and Queens are inaugurated in te New Church. The Dutch royal house is very modest, there are only inaugurations and no coronations.
Today, the church is also mainly used as an exhibition center, including the World Press photo exhibition.

Aan de noordkant van de Dam staat de Nieuwe Kerk, uit de 14e eeuw.
In de Nieuwe Kerk worden de Nederlandse koningen en koninginnen ingehuldigd. Het Nederlandse koningshuis is zeer bescheiden: er zijn alleen inauguraties en geen kroningen.
Het interieur van de Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam toont prachtige glas-in-loodramen en foto’s van de koninklijke bruiloften.
Tegenwoordig wordt de kerk ook vooral gebruikt als tentoonstellingscentrum, onder meer voor de fototentoonstelling van World Press.
In de zes eeuwen dat de kerk zich op deze plek bevind heeft ze veel meegemaakt. Een toren die nooit gebouwd werd, de avonturen van onze VOC admiraals, de inhuldiging van koning Willem Alexander en Máxima, een grote brand en de natuurlijk de Beeldenstorm. Veel Hollandse schrijvers zijn er geëerd met gedenkstenen, zoals Joost van den Vondel, Multatuli en P.C. Hooft.
