The Nieuwmarkt area Amsterdam is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Amsterdam.
At the center is the Waag, the weigh-house, built in 1490 as a former city gate. The Amsterdam city wall has disappeared, but two city gates remain.
In the 17th century, the Waag was also a meeting place for guilds members. For example, the guild of surgeons, who were regarded as craftsmen rather than medics. Rembrandt’s famous painting ‘Lesson in Anatomy’, currently on display in the Mauritshuis in The Hague, originally hung here.
The Nieuwmarkt area is also Amsterdam’s China Town, with many Chinese eateries and shops. The Chinese atmosphere is also very culturally prominent. Even the street name signs are bilingual, Dutch and Chinese.
The Nieuwmarkt has much more to offer than just sex, drugs and rock and roll.

De Nieuwmarktbuurt Amsterdam is een van de oudste wijken van Amsterdam.
Centraal staat de Waag, de waag, gebouwd in 1490 als voormalige stadspoort. De Amsterdamse stadsmuur is verdwenen, maar er zijn nog twee stadspoorten overgebleven.
In de 17e eeuw was de Waag ook een ontmoetingsplaats voor de gilden. Bijvoorbeeld het chirurgijns gilde, dat eerder als ambachtslieden dan als medici werd beschouwd. Hier hing oorspronkelijk Rembrandts beroemde schilderij ‘Les in Anatomy’, momenteel te zien in het Mauritshuis in Den Haag.
Het Nieuwmarkt gebied is ook het Amsterdamse China Town, met veel Chinese eethuisjes en winkels. Ook cultureel is de Chinese atmosfeer heel bepalend. Zelfs de straatnaam borden zijn tweetalig, Nederlands en Chinees.
