After the Reformation Amsterdam churches had to transform from Catholic to Protestant.
Those who had kept the Catholic faith had to go to hidden churches to attend mass. One of the best kept examples is the hidden church ‘Our Lord at the attic Amsterdam’, located in the middle of the Red Light District.
The large influx of Lutherans and Calvinists from the Southern Netherlands changed Amsterdam in the 17th and 18th centuries. From a predominantly Catholic city to a city with many religions. The Calvinist community of Amsterdam was full of Flemish people. To this day, Amsterdam is a city of many religions.
The 17th century interior of Our Lord at the Attic is still intact and very worth a visit.

Onze Lieve Heer op zolder Amsterdam met het originele interieur van de verborgen kerk en altaar.
Na de Reformatie moesten de Amsterdamse kerken zich transformeren van katholiek naar protestant.
De grote stroom van Lutheranen en Calvinisten uit de Zuid Nederlanden veranderde Amsterdam in de 17e en 18e eeuw. Van een overwegend katholieke stad in een stad met vele religies. De calvinistische gemeente van Amsterdam zat vol met Vlamingen. Tot op de dag van vandaag is Amsterdam een stad met vele religies.
Degenen die het katholieke geloof hadden behouden, moesten naar verborgen kerken gaan om de mis bij te wonen. Een van de best bewaarde voorbeelden is de verborgen kerk ‘Onze Lieve Heer op zolder Amsterdam’, gelegen midden op de Wallen.
Het 17e-eeuwse interieur is nog steeds intact en zeker een bezoek waard.

Heineken is a typical Amsterdam beer and the company was founded in 1864 by Gerard Adriaan Heineken. The brewery at Stadhouderskade was then owned by Freddy Heineken and in use by Heineken until 1988.
At the moment Heineken is the second largest beer brewery in the world, after Anheuser-Busch InBev.
Now the massive brick building is in use as a multimedia information centre. Guided tours at the Heineken Experience Amsterdam are given every weekday all year around for visitors, if 18 years or older.
They will hear about the Heineken history, but also the brewing proces is explained. It is much more than just another brewery tour.
Beside of history and celebrating the world famous beer, there is a three dimensional ride that takes one through each step of the brewing process.
A beer bottle with a personalised label is available after the visit.
Also the former stables are open for public and even nowadays you can see the Belgian breed horses pulling the beer wagons through Amsterdam.

Naast de geschiedenis en informatie over het wereldberoemde bier, is er een driedimensionale rit die elke stap van het bier brouwen doorloopt. Na het bezoek is er een bierflesje met een gepersonaliseerd etiket beschikbaar.
Ook de voormalige stallen zijn open voor publiek en zelfs vandaag de dag kun je soms de Belgische fokpaarden de bierwagens door Amsterdam zien trekken.

For the Amsterdam diocese Saint Nicholas Church Amsterdam is the main Catholic church of the city.
The cross shaped, neo-Renaissance basilica’s construction was completed in 1887.
Many Dutch churches are dedicated to the patron saint of the sailors, but Saint Nicolas is also the patron of Amsterdam.
The basilica consists of a large dome flanked by two Baroque crowned towers. Inside the church, behind the altar is the Crown of the Emperor Maximilian I of Austria, a gift after his pilgrimage to Amsterdam.
After the miracle of 1345 Amsterdam became a holy destination for devoted pilgrims. Nowadays we still remember the miracle with a yearly silent procession.
One week in March, Catholics of all ages are invited to Holy Masses and to honour the Occo Codex from 1530. The silent procession takes place between midnight and Sunday four o’clock. The silent walk starts at the Beguinage chapel and ends at the Nicolas Church and leads along historical Amsterdam and the Red Light District.

Voor het bisdom Amsterdam is de Sint-Niklaaskerk Amsterdam de belangrijkste katholieke kerk van de stad.
De constructie van de kruisvormige neo renaissance basiliek werd in 1887 voltooid.
Veel Nederlandse kerken zijn gewijd aan de patroonheilige van de zeelieden, maar Sinterklaas is ook de patroonheilige van Amsterdam.
De basiliek bestaat uit een grote koepel geflankeerd door twee barokke gekroonde torens. Binnen in de kerk, achter het altaar, bevindt zich de Kroon van keizer Maximiliaan I van Oostenrijk, een geschenk na zijn pelgrimstocht naar Amsterdam.
Na het wonder van 1345 werd Amsterdam een heilige bestemming voor toegewijde pelgrims. Tegenwoordig herdenken we het wonder nog steeds met een jaarlijkse stille processie.
Een week in maart worden katholieken van alle leeftijden uitgenodigd voor de heilige missen en ter ere van de Occo Codex uit 1530. De stille processie vindt plaats tussen middernacht en zondag vier uur. De stilte wandeling start bij de Begijnhof kapel en eindigt bij de Nicolaaskerk en leidt langs historisch Amsterdam en de Wallen.

The first inhabitants were fishermen and traders, who in 1275 received an exemption from toll from Count Floris the Fifth. This is also the oldest official document of the trading city.
The most important Amsterdam events are commemorated on Dam Square.
For the monarchy the royal weddings and abdications have been celebrated here.
The most important moment for Amsterdam is the National Commemoration of the war victims on the 4th of May. At 8 pm there will be a two-minute silence throughout the Netherlands. The next day on the 5th of May is celebrated as Liberation Day.

In de Amstel werd een dam gebouwd, vandaar de naam Amstelredam.
De eerste bewoners waren vissers en handelaars, die in 1275 van graaf Floris de Vijfde een vrijstelling van tol kregen. Dit is tevens het oudste officiële document van de handelsstad.
De belangrijkste Amsterdamse gebeurtenissen worden herdacht op de Dam.
Voor de monarchie zijn er de koninklijke huwelijken en abdicaties gevierd.
Het belangrijkste moment voor Amsterdam is de Nationale Herdenking van de oorlogsslachtoffers op 4 mei. Om 20 uur is er dan een twee minuten stilte in heel Nederland. De volgende dag op 5 mei wordt gevierd als Bevrijdingsdag.

Nemo (New Metropolis) is a Science Museum for children, where themes such as magnetism and electricity are explained in a playful way.
Nemo Science Museum Amsterdam has a roof terrace that resembles a city beach. From here you have a beautiful view over the city and you can enjoy coffee or lunch.
The museum exists 100 years this year. But at different locations in Amsterdam and under different names, such as NINT Netherlands Institute for Industry and Technology.
The NEMO building was designed by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano. It was built as a mirror image of the tunnel entrance under NEMO. The facades are copper plates, which are coloured green.
The shape is like a ship and local Amsterdammers call it ‘the Titanic’.
Both children and adults visit NEMO.

Nemo (New Metropolis) is een Wetenschapsmuseum voor kinderen, waar thema’s als magnetisme en elektriciteit op speelse wijze worden uitgelegd.
Nemo Science Museum Amsterdam heeft een dakterras zoals een van de Amsterdamse stadsstranden. Vanaf hier heeft u een prachtig uitzicht over de stad en kunt u genieten van koffie of een lunch.
Het museum bestaat dit jaar 100 jaar. Maar wel op verschillende locaties in Amstetdam en onder verschillende namen, zoals NINT Nederlands Instituut voor Nijverheid en Techniek.
Het NEMO gebouw is een ontwerp van de beroemde Italiaanse architect Renzo Piano. Het is gebouwd als een spiegelbeeld van de tunnel ingang onder het NEMO.
De facades zijn koperen platen, die groen verkleurd zijn.
De vorm is als een schip en lokale Amsterdammers noemden het al snel ‘de Titanic’.
Zowel kinderen als volwassenen bezoeken het NEMO.

On the north side of Dam Square is the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), from the 14th century.
In the six centuries that the church has been on this site, it has been through a lot. A tower that was never built, the adventures of our VOC admirals, the inauguration of King Willem Alexander and Máxima, a major fire and of course the Beeldenstorm, the time of iconoclasm.
Many Dutch writers have been honored with memorial stones, such as Joost van den Vondel, Multatuli and P.C. Hooft.
The Dutch Kings and Queens are inaugurated in te New Church. The Dutch royal house is very modest, there are only inaugurations and no coronations.
Today, the church is also mainly used as an exhibition center, including the World Press photo exhibition.

Aan de noordkant van de Dam staat de Nieuwe Kerk, uit de 14e eeuw.
In de Nieuwe Kerk worden de Nederlandse koningen en koninginnen ingehuldigd. Het Nederlandse koningshuis is zeer bescheiden: er zijn alleen inauguraties en geen kroningen.
Het interieur van de Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam toont prachtige glas-in-loodramen en foto’s van de koninklijke bruiloften.
Tegenwoordig wordt de kerk ook vooral gebruikt als tentoonstellingscentrum, onder meer voor de fototentoonstelling van World Press.
In de zes eeuwen dat de kerk zich op deze plek bevind heeft ze veel meegemaakt. Een toren die nooit gebouwd werd, de avonturen van onze VOC admiraals, de inhuldiging van koning Willem Alexander en Máxima, een grote brand en de natuurlijk de Beeldenstorm. Veel Hollandse schrijvers zijn er geëerd met gedenkstenen, zoals Joost van den Vondel, Multatuli en P.C. Hooft.

The Amstel River is the namesake of Amsterdam. Skippers and fishermen settled on the Amstel. A dam was needed to keep the swampy area dry. The settlement was called Amstelredam. This later became Amsterdam.
The Amstel river drains water from the polder rivers to the south of Amsterdam.
The water feeds the Amsterdam canals and eventually it reaches to the sea via the IJ.
The surrounding Amstelland is located lower than the river itself and therefore dike protection is necessary. In the event of an imminent flood, a number of polders will be flooded to save Amsterdam.
Along the Amstel river Amsterdam are several beautiful 17th century country houses and windmills. Only the Riekermolen can still pumpf water.
For Amsterdammers, the Amstel is an important recreational area.

Langs de Amstel in Amsterdam staan diverse prachtige 17e-eeuwse landhuizen en windmolens. Alleen de Riekermolen kan nog water pompen.
Voor Amsterdammers is de Amstel een belangrijk recreatiegebied.

Enkele tips voor antiek- en rommelmarkten Amsterdam.

What is now the Jordaan area Amsterdam was in the seventeenth century the place of housing for workers who built the mansions on the canals.
It looks like a miniature version of the canal belt, but smaller houses with narrower canals and bridges.
This gives this district an intimate and small-scale atmosphere.

Wat nu de Jordaan is, was in de zeventiende eeuw de woonplaats van arbeiders die de herenhuizen aan de grachten bouwden.
Het lijkt op een miniatuurversie van de grachtengordel, maar dan kleinere huizen met smallere grachten en bruggen.
Dit geeft deze wijk een intieme en kleinschalige sfeer.

De Jordaan is een voormalige arbeidersbuurt. Tegenwoordig is de Jordaan een van de duurste buurten van Amsterdam, maar in de vorige eeuw was dit heel anders.

Scheepvaartmuseum, the Maritime Museum Amsterdam was built in 1656 as a naval arsenal and shipyard for the Admiralty of Amsterdam.
The rich history of the Dutch East and West Indian Company can be followed here.
A visit is well worth the effort including the replica of the original 17th century trading ship the ‘Amsterdam’. The Amsterdam sank near Hastings, on its way to Indonesia.
On show as well is William the First’s royal shallop from 1881, rowed by twenty rowers.
More highlights are the collection of nautical charts, the world famous Blaeu Atlases printed in Amsterdam in 1663, naval prints, globes, naval equipment and instruments, Bram van der Velde paintings, figureheads, plus a collection of 500 ships and boats models.
Until 1973 the headquarters and communication centre of the Royal Dutch Navy was based here. Then in 1981 it became this museum.

Tot 1973 was hier het hoofdkwartier en het communicatiecentrum van de Koninklijke Marine gevestigd. In 1981 werd het dit museum.
