Until 1878, Museumplein was an agricultural area with farms.
Then the last windmill was demolished to make way for the Rijks Museum. A luxurious district was planned and two small world exhibitions were also held on the square.
During the German occupation, the entire square and the museums were used by the Nazis. The square was no longer accessible to the local population and bunkers were built.
What is now the American Consulate became the Nazi headquarters.

Bloemgracht (translated: Flower Canal), bordering the Jordaan area and near the Westerkerk. A couple with flower decorated bridges span the canal.
Herengracht is one of main canals. With the so called ‘Gouden Bocht’ (‘Golden Bend’) it is considered to be the most prestigious. Most impressive housesbuilt by the rich merchants of the 17th century Dutch Republic. The mayor of Amsterdam is living at Herengracht number 502. Femke Halsema, the first ever female mayor of Amsterdam.
Reguliersgracht is a place to take a ‘postcard pictures’ of Amsterdam. Most Amsterdam canals are bending in half a circle, but Reguliersgracht is straight. Therefore a unique perspective is visible of seven similar bridges in a row.

The Nieuwmarkt area Amsterdam is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Amsterdam.
At the center is the Waag, the weigh-house, built in 1490 as a former city gate. The Amsterdam city wall has disappeared, but two city gates remain.
In the 17th century, the Waag was also a meeting place for guilds members. For example, the guild of surgeons, who were regarded as craftsmen rather than medics. Rembrandt’s famous painting ‘Lesson in Anatomy’, currently on display in the Mauritshuis in The Hague, originally hung here.
The Nieuwmarkt area is also Amsterdam’s China Town, with many Chinese eateries and shops. The Chinese atmosphere is also very culturally prominent. Even the street name signs are bilingual, Dutch and Chinese.

De Nieuwmarktbuurt Amsterdam is een van de oudste wijken van Amsterdam.

De Pijp was built at the end of the 19th century to enable a new influx of labor and population to Amsterdam.
Many artists and students also settled in the district.
De Pijp was nicknamed the Latin Quarter of Amsterdam. With the small streets, the alternative residents, the many bars and restaurants and the atmosphere in De Pijp, it resembles the famous Parisian student district.

On the East side of the city the Jewish Amsterdam Quarter is located and here lived and worked Jewish refugees from all Europe.
The Sephardic community of Amsterdam founded in 1657 the so called Portuguese Synagogue. At that time it was the largest Jewish building in the world. In Amsterdam it was possible for the Jewish community to show their self-confidence and pride. This was often not possible in the rest of the world.
The German speaking Ashkenazi Jewish Amsterdam built the High German Synagogue, which is nowadays the Jewish Historical Museum.
End of the 16th century Protestant and Jewish from Antwerp fled for the Spanish suppression. They brought their business and art of diamonds polishing.
Until now Amsterdam kept it’s name as a diamond city.
The diamond company Gassan, founded in 1878 was the first one to use steam power for the cutting and polishing.
Coster Diamonds, founded in 1852, did finish the Koh-i-Noor, the famous Indian diamond of the British Crown.
Shortly before World War 2 in Amsterdam of the total population of 800.000, 140.000 were Jewish.
The various Orthodox and modern Jewish communities tried to resume their lives after the war. This was often not easy.
Jewish history is still very present in Amsterdam. Of course a visit the Anne Frank House is a must do.

Aan de oostkant van de stad ligt het Joods Amsterdams Kwartier en hier woonden en werkten Joodse vluchtelingen uit heel Europa.
De Sefardische gemeenschap van Amsterdam stichtte in 1657 de zogenaamde Portugese Synagoge. Het was destijds het grootste Joodse gebouw ter wereld.
In Amsterdam was het voor de joodse gemeenschap mogelijk om zo hun zelfbewustzijn en trots te tonen. Dit was in de rest van de wereld vaak niet mogelijk.
De Duitstalige Asjkenazische Joden Amsterdam bouwden de Hoogduitse Synagoge, tegenwoordig het Joods Historisch Museum.
Eind 16e eeuw vluchtten protestanten en joden uit Antwerpen voor de Spaanse onderdrukking. Ze brachten hun bedrijf en de kunst van het diamantslijpen mee.
Tot nu toe behield Amsterdam zijn naam als diamantstad.
Het diamantbedrijf Gassan, opgericht in 1878, was de eerste die stoomkracht gebruikte voor het slijpen en polijsten.
Coster Diamonds, opgericht in 1852, voltooide de Koh-i-Noor, de beroemde Indiase diamant van de Britse Kroon.

The Muiderslot Castle Amsterdam is a beautiful castle, and it is also beautifully situated on the river Vecht and the former Zuiderzee.

Muiderslot is more than just a castle. The old castle is surrounded by water and greenery. The herb garden and vegetable garden are very worthwhile to visit.

Kasteel Muiderslot Amsterdam is een prachtig kasteel en bovendien idyllisch gelegen aan de rivier de Vecht en de voormalige Zuiderzee.

Het is massief gebouwd als een vierkant middeleeuws kasteel met op elke hoek een toren. Met een gracht en brug is het zeer indrukwekkend. Het 700 jaar oude kasteel is een van de best bewaarde kasteeltjes van Nederland.
Muiderslot is meer dan alleen een kasteel. Het kasteel is omringt door groen en water. De kruidentuin en moestuin zijn zeer de moeite waard om te bezoeken.

When you say Amsterdam, you also say weed and coffee shops.
Amsterdam is worldwide known for being the capital of cannabis culture and is characterising the city as open and tolerant.
The city council has steadily imposed stricter rules for buying soft drugs, there are still about one hundred of these coffee shops in the city.
A smoking ban is in force in the cafes and restaurants. In the coffee shops there are separate rooms to smoke a long cigarette.
Consuming is not mandatory. If you are curious about the inside you can just walk in the place without any problem.
Mellow Yellow was the first coffee shop that in secret began to sell marijuana, cannabis and hash. It was a real coffee shop and since then the name have not changed. A quarter of all the tourist that visit Amsterdam got into a coffee shop.
The most famous coffee shop in Amsterdam is probably The Bulldog.
The best Coffeeshop in Amsterdam is the Dampkring or Atmosphere. Various Hollywood celebrities got high here.
The city makes a distinction between soft drugs and hard drugs that may not be sold in the coffeeshops. To buy and use soft drug on the streets is prohibited.

The Amsterdam cruise ship terminal is located in the heart of the city centre, next to the central railway station.
