Museumplein, south of the canal belt, is unique in Europe and much more than only a square.
Advanced town planning in the last 10 years made it into a fascinating place of art.
Some of the most important museums in Europe are present at Museum Quarter Amsterdam: the Rijksmuseum (more info …), the van Gogh museum (more info …) and Stedelijk Museum (the Municipal Museum of contemporary art).
And the world famous Concertgebouw, know for it’s perfect acoustics and home of the Concertgebouw Orchestra (more info …).
Until 1878, Museumplein was an agricultural area with farms.
Then the last windmill was demolished to make way for the Rijks Museum. A luxurious district was planned and two small world exhibitions were also held on the square.
During the German occupation, the entire square and the museums were used by the Nazis. The square was no longer accessible to the local population and bunkers were built.
What is now the American Consulate became the Nazi headquarters.

Het Museumplein, ten zuiden van de grachtengordel, is uniek in Europa en veel meer dan alleen een plein.
De geavanceerde stadsplanning van de afgelopen tien jaar heeft het tot een fascinerende kunstplek gemaakt.
In het Museumkwartier Amsterdam zijn enkele van de belangrijkste musea van Europa aanwezig: het Rijksmuseum, het Van Gogh Museum en het Stedelijk Museum (het Stedelijk Museum voor Hedendaagse Kunst).
En het wereldberoemde Concertgebouw, bekend om zijn perfecte akoestiek en thuisbasis van het Concertgebouworkest.
Tot 1878 was het Museumplein landbouwgebied met boerderijen.
Toen werd de laatste windmolen afgebroken om plaats te maken voor het Rijks Museum. Gepland was een luxe wijk en op het plein vonden ook twee kleine wereld tentoonstellingen gehouden.
Tijdens de Duitse bezetting werd het hele plein en de musea gebruikt door de nazis. Het plein was niet meer toegankelijk voor de lokale bevolking en er werden bunkers gebouwd.
Wat nu het Amerikaanse consulaat is werd het Nazi hoofdkwartier.
