More important are the 70 stained glass windows (de Goudse Glazen) from the 16th Century. Half of all stained glass in the Netherlands is in the Saint John church. It is truly a highlight in European glass art.
One of the oldest glasses dates from 1552. An image of Jesus Christ being baptized by John. This was a gift from the Utrecht bishop.
Many Dutch cities donated glass to present themselves to the faithful. As a kind of advertisement for their city.
A special glass is also the panel with the theme of the Dutch Liberation after the Second World War.
Made in 1947. It shows anxious people in striped clothing. A reference to the concentration camps.
During the Second World War, the most valuable glasses were removed and hidden from the Germans.
The most modern work of glass art dates from 2016.
It is abstract with circles related to Erasmus’s translation of the bible. All circles that differ in size and density and give the impression as if one is standing in front of heaven.
St. Jan’s Church is located in beautiful, historical Gouda and is the city’s principal monument.
Originally a Catholic church, but became a Protestant place of worship in 1573. This as a result of the Dutch Revolt against the Spanish siege.

Bezoek beslist de Sint Jan’s Kathedraal.
Deze is gewijd aan Johannes de Doper, de beschermheilige van Gouda.
Het is de langste kerk van Nederland, maar meer belangrijk zijn de 70 gebrandschilderde glas in lood ramen, de zogenaamde Goudse Glazen. uit de 16e eeuw.
Van alle gebrandschilderd glas in Nederland bevindt zich de helft in de Sint Jan. Het is echt een hoogtepunt in de Europese glas kunst.
Een van de oudste glazen dateert uit 1552. Een afbeelding van Jesus Christus die gedoopt wordt door Johannes. Dit was een geschenk van de Utrechtse bisschop.
Veel Hollandse steden hebben glas geschonken, om zich aan de gelovigen te presenteren. Als een soort advertentie voor hun stad.
Een bijzonder glas is ook het paneel met de Nederlandse Bevrijding na de Tweede Wereld Oorlog als thema. Gemaakt in 1947. Te zien zijn angstige mensen in gestreepte pakken. Een verwijzing naar de concentratie kampen.
Tijdens de tweede wereldoorlog zijn de kostbaarste glazen verwijderd en verborgen voor de Duitsers.
Het modernste glas kunstwerk dateert uit 2016. Het is abstract met cirkels die gerelateerd zijn aan Erasmus bijbel vertaling. De cirkels zijn verschillend van grote en densiteit en geven de indruk alsof men voor de hemel staat.
De Sint Jan kerk is Gouda’s belangrijkste monument en bevind zich midden in het prachtige historische centrum van Gouda.
Oorspronkelijk was het een Rooms Katholieke kerk, maar in 1573 werd het een protestantse gemeente. Dit als gevolg van de Nederlandse opstand tegen de Spaanse overheersing.

Gouda’s town hall has one of the oldest town halls in the Netherlands in Gothic style.
It is located in the lively center of Gouda and is world famous.
The city fire of 1361 destroyed the predecessor of this town hall.
Requirement for the construction of a new town hall was: it had to be located in the middle of the market. That way it would be less susceptible to fire.
The annual Christmas atmosphere around the town hall makes a visit to Gouda definitely worth it.
The ‘Gouda by candlelight’ event starts in mid-December. The town hall is transformed by a light show into a true modern light work of art.
Every year, the Norwegian sister city of Kongsberg donates a twenty-meter high Christmas tree. In the past lit with candles, now with LED lighting.

Het stadhuis van Gouda heeft een van de oudste stadhuizen van Nederland in gotische stijl.
Het staat midden in het levendige centrum van Gouda en is wereldberoemd.
De stadsbrand van 1361 verwoestte de voorganger van dit stadhuis.
Voorwaarde voor de bouw van een nieuw gemeentehuis was: het moest midden op de markt komen te staan. Op die manier zou het minder gevoelig zijn voor brand.
Rondom het stadhuis is de jaarlijkse kerstsfeer een bezoek aan Gouda zeker waard.
Half december start het ‘Gouda bij kaarslicht’ evenement. Het stadhuis veranderd door een lichtshow in een waar modern licht kunstwerk.
Elk jaar schenkt de Noorse zusterstad Kongsberg, speciaal voor Kerst een twintig meter hoge kerstboom. In het verleden verlicht met kaarsen, nu met led verlichting.

De Waag Gouda is a beautiful 17th century building, built in brick in the Dutch Classicism architectural style. Built by the famous architect Pieter Post in 1668.
A tableau of Carrara marble in the historical front facade shows a depiction of the weighing of cheese.

The Cheese and Crafts Museum is also located in the Waag. Gouda is not only known for its cheese, but pipes, beer, candles and pottery have also been produced there in the past. And of course the famous Gouda stroopwafels.
Beside of weighing house and ‘Cheese and Crafts Museum’ the Gouda tourist office is located here. Saying cheese means saying Gouda!

Weigh House Gouda

De Waag Gouda is een prachtig 17e-eeuws gebouw, opgetrokken in baksteen in de bouwstijl van het Hollands Classicisme. Gebouwd door de beroemde architect Pieter Post in 1668.
Een tableau van Carrara-marmer in de historische voorgevel toont een afbeelding van het wegen van kaas.
Het ontwerp is in de stijl van het zogenaamde Hollandse classicisme.
De opdrachtgevers waren veelal rijke kooplieden uit de 17e eeuw, die de meest gedistingeerde en klassieke stijl wensten. Ook in andere Nederlandse steden werden veel gebouwen in deze stijl gebouwd door onder meer Jacob van Campen of Philips Vingboons.
In de Waag is ook het Kaas- en Ambachten museum gevestigd. Gouda staat niet alleen bekend om zijn kaas, maar er werden in het verleden ook pijpen, bier, kaarsen en aardewerk geproduceerd. En natuurlijk de bekende Goudse stroopwafels.
Naast de Waag en het Kaas- en Ambachten museum is hier het VVV-kantoor van Gouda gevestigd. Kaas zeggen betekent Gouda zeggen!
