De Waag Gouda is a beautiful 17th century building, built in brick in the Dutch Classicism architectural style. Built by the famous architect Pieter Post in 1668.
A tableau of Carrara marble in the historical front facade shows a depiction of the weighing of cheese.
The design is in the style of the so-called Dutch classicism.
The clients were usually wealthy merchants from the 17th century, who wanted the most distinguished and classical style. Many buildings in this style were also built in other Dutch cities by Jacob van Campen or Philips Vingboons, among others.
The Cheese and Crafts Museum is also located in the Waag. Gouda is not only known for its cheese, but pipes, beer, candles and pottery have also been produced there in the past. And of course the famous Gouda stroopwafels.
Beside of weighing house and ‘Cheese and Crafts Museum’ the Gouda tourist office is located here. Saying cheese means saying Gouda!
De Waag Gouda is een prachtig 17e-eeuws gebouw, opgetrokken in baksteen in de bouwstijl van het Hollands Classicisme. Gebouwd door de beroemde architect Pieter Post in 1668.
Een tableau van Carrara-marmer in de historische voorgevel toont een afbeelding van het wegen van kaas.
Het ontwerp is in de stijl van het zogenaamde Hollandse classicisme.
De opdrachtgevers waren veelal rijke kooplieden uit de 17e eeuw, die de meest gedistingeerde en klassieke stijl wensten. Ook in andere Nederlandse steden werden veel gebouwen in deze stijl gebouwd door onder meer Jacob van Campen of Philips Vingboons.
In de Waag is ook het Kaas- en Ambachten museum gevestigd. Gouda staat niet alleen bekend om zijn kaas, maar er werden in het verleden ook pijpen, bier, kaarsen en aardewerk geproduceerd. En natuurlijk de bekende Goudse stroopwafels.
Naast de Waag en het Kaas- en Ambachten museum is hier het VVV-kantoor van Gouda gevestigd. Kaas zeggen betekent Gouda zeggen!
