Aalsmeer is located about ten miles south of Amsterdam.
Aalsmeer was an area with a lot of water, but a scarcity of land.
As a result, it was used intensively and the cultivation of strawberries started.
That was the basis for today’s floriculture.
Aalsmeer has the largest flower auction in the world, called Flora Holland Aalsmeer, named after the goddess of flowers and Spring.
The historic garden of Aalsmeer provides a good insight into the horticultural history of the Netherlands.
The cut flowers are grown in greenhouses, as the climate is to cold for open air growing.
Roses, chrysanthemums, tulips and carnations are among the best-selling flowers.
The auction is owned by a corporation of florists and employs 1800 people.

De snijbloemen worden in kassen gekweekt, omdat het klimaat te koud is voor buitenteelt.
Rozen, chrysanten, tulpen en anjers behoren tot de best verkochte bloemen.
De veiling is een coöperatie en eigendom van de verenigde bloemisten en bloemenhandelaren. Het biedt werk aan 1800 mensen.

Floriade 2022 Amsterdam Almere took place from the 14th of April to the 9th of October 2022.
A horticultural expo that only takes place once every ten years in the Netherlands.
It showed the power of Dutch landscaping and garden design with the splendor of trees, flowers and plants.
Almere is the youngest city in the Netherlands, in the middle of the Flevopolder, about twenty miles from Amsterdam.
The Expo showed 40 inspiring country presentations, pavilions with sustainable innovations, a cable car over the Floriade park, a spectacular greenhouse complex and art and culture programmes.
‘Growing green cities’ was the theme. It was about the connection between green and the themes ‘water’, ‘biodiversity’, ‘green raw material’, ‘health’, ‘air quality’ and ‘the circular economy’.
In ten years another place will be hosting the Floriade 2032.

De Expo toonde 40 inspirerende landen presentaties, paviljoens met duurzame innovaties, een kabelbaan over het Floriade park, een spectaculair kassencomplex en kunst- en cultuurprogramma’s.
‘Groeiende groene steden’ was het thema. Het ging over de verbinding tussen groen en de thema’s ‘water’, ‘biodiversiteit’, ‘groene grondstof’, ‘gezondheid’, ‘luchtkwaliteit’ en ‘de circulaire economie’.
Over tien jaar zal er misschien in een andere stad of op een andere plek de Floriade 2032 plaatsvinden.
