After the Reformation Amsterdam churches had to transform from Catholic to Protestant.
Those who had kept the Catholic faith had to go to hidden churches to attend mass. One of the best kept examples is the hidden church ‘Our Lord at the attic Amsterdam’, located in the middle of the Red Light District.
The large influx of Lutherans and Calvinists from the Southern Netherlands changed Amsterdam in the 17th and 18th centuries. From a predominantly Catholic city to a city with many religions. The Calvinist community of Amsterdam was full of Flemish people. To this day, Amsterdam is a city of many religions.
The 17th century interior of Our Lord at the Attic is still intact and very worth a visit.

De calvinistische gemeente van Amsterdam zat vol met Vlamingen. Tot op de dag van vandaag is Amsterdam een stad met vele religies.
Degenen die het katholieke geloof hadden behouden, moesten naar verborgen kerken gaan om de mis bij te wonen. Een van de best bewaarde voorbeelden is de verborgen kerk ‘Onze Lieve Heer op zolder Amsterdam’, gelegen midden op de Wallen.
Het 17e-eeuwse interieur is nog steeds intact en zeker een bezoek waard.
