Reason for a visit is that the Markthal Rotterdam, with its horseshoe-shaped architecture, is that it has a very special design.
The ingenious concept resembles a huge airplane hangar. Above the market floor are 10 floors with more than 200 apartments and underneath are 1200 parking spaces.
In addition, all kinds of delicacies are displayed next to each other. Eight restaurant, fifteen gourmet shops and around one hundred stands.
For foodies fresh fish, regional vegetables, dairy products and exotic sweets are offered.
The Markthal is nicknamed the Rotterdam Sistine Chapel. The vault of 4,000 different building blocks is painted with the theme of ‘the horn of plenty’. Beautiful images of fruit, fish, birds and flowers. The design is by Iris Roskam and Arno Coenen.

Daarnaast worden er allerlei lekkernijen naast elkaar uitgestald. Acht restaurants, vijftien gastronomische winkels en ongeveer honderd stands.
Voor fijnproevers worden verse vis, regionale groenten, zuivelproducten en exotische zoetigheden aangeboden.
De Markthal heeft de bijnaam de Rotterdamse Sixtijnse Kapel. Het gewelf van 4.000 verschillende bouwstenen is beschilderd met als thema de ‘de hoorn des overvloeds’. Prachtige afbeeldingen van fruit, vissen, vogels en bloemen. Het ontwerp is van Iris Roskam en Arno Coenen.
