A dam was built in the Amstel river, hence the name Amstel’s dam.
The first inhabitants were fishermen and traders, who in 1275 received an exemption from toll from Count Floris the Fifth. This is also the oldest official document of the trading city.
The most important Amsterdam events are commemorated on Dam Square.
For the monarchy the royal weddings and abdications have been celebrated here.
The most important moment for Amsterdam is the National Commemoration of the war victims on the 4th of May. At 8 pm there will be a two-minute silence throughout the Netherlands. The next day on the 5th of May is celebrated as Liberation Day.
