The Amstel river drains water from the polder rivers to the south of Amsterdam.
The water feeds the Amsterdam canals and eventually it reaches to the sea via the IJ.
The surrounding Amstelland is located lower than the river itself and therefore dike protection is necessary. In the event of an imminent flood, a number of polders will be flooded to save Amsterdam.
Along the Amstel river Amsterdam are several beautiful 17th century country houses and windmills. Only the Riekermolen can still pump water.
For Amsterdammers, the Amstel is an important recreational area.
