Het centraal station is voor veel reizigers de eerste indruk van Amsterdam.
Het is gebouwd door Pierre Cuypers op een kunstmatig eiland.
De hoofdingang wordt links en rechts geflankeerd door twee torens. De rechter toren geeft de juiste tijd aan. De linkertoren geeft de windrichting weer.
De hoofdingang van Centraal Station is rijk gedecoreerd.
Veel syboliek is te zien, zoals altijd het wiel met vleugels.
Ook de wereldwijde handels contacten zijn afgebeeld, zoals de geidealiseerde tabakshandel. Alles allegorieen over verheven zaken zoals beschaving en broederschap. Indertijd verwachte men een enorme groei van de welvaart door de moderne spoorwegen.
Ook de wapens van andere Europese wereldsteden, Berlijn en Londen zijn afgebeeld.
