The origin of the name Monnickendam comes from the monks who traded agricultural products here.
There has always been a thriving maritime shipping and Baltic trade and even today there are still active shipyards and eel smokehouses.
Highlights are the Sint Nicolaaskerk and the Speeltoren with a carillon from 1596.
In the facade of the town hall a monk is depicted, the symbol of the city.
Classic flat-bottom boats depart daily for boat trips on the Markermeer.
On October the 11th, 1572, the Battle of the Zuiderzee took place off the coast of Monnickendam. An important victory for the Dutch over the Spaniards during the Eighty Years’ War. The hero of the day was Jan Haring, who captured the flag of the Spanish flagship. His death as a result. The victory is reason enough to commemorate Holland’s struggle and freedom.

De oorsprong van de naam Monnickendam komt van de monniken die hier landbouwproducten verhandelden.
Er is altijd een bloeiende zeevaart en Baltische handel geweest en zelfs vandaag de dag zijn er nog steeds actieve scheepswerven en palingrokerijen.
Hoogtepunten zijn de Sint Nicolaaskerk en de Speeltoren met een beiaard uit 1596.
In de gevel van het stadhuis is een monnik afgebeeld, het symbool van de stad.
Dagelijks vertrekken klassieke platbodems voor vaartochten op het Markermeer.
Op 11 Oktober 1572 vond voor de kust van Monnickendam de slag om de Zuiderzee plaats. Een belangrijke overwinning voor de Hollanders op de Spanjaarden gedurende de tachtig jarige oorlog. Held van de dag was Jan Haring, die de vlag van het Spaanse vlaggeschip buit maakte. Hij kwam hierbij om het leven. De overwinning is reden genoeg om Hollands strijd en vrijheid te herdenken.
