Marken

a family in traditional marken costumes

Since 1957 the island of Marken is connected to the mainland via a dam.
Before the damming of the Zuiderzee there has always been the danger of flooding.
So the people from Marken built their houses on artificial hilltops or on poles.
The closed community of Marken has been declared a protected village by the Dutch government.
The lighthouse on the is called ‘the White Horse’, due to its shape.
Every half hour there is ferry sailing to Volendam.
