Leiden was already the center of the cloth industry in the 14th century.
The Cloth Hall from 1640 was an inspection hall for Leiden textiles.
Wool from England was processed, dyed and exported.
Museum the Cloth Hall Leiden also provides information about the city’s history. Well known artists have captured the city, such as Rembrandt, Lucas van Leyden and Jan Steen.
The most important work is a former altarpiece from the Pieterskerk, ‘The Last Judgment’, a triptych by Lucas van Leyden (1526).
In recent decades, the museum has made a number of expansions, of both modern and historic architecture. The 19th century staircase from the Sint Joris doelen, the meeting place of the former Leiden Doelen militia, is decisive.
More recent is the enormous modern expansion, which is inspired by 17th century brick architecture. The archives, storage, offices and restaurant of Museum de Lakenhal are housed here.

Het belangrijkste werk is een voormalig altaarstuk uit de Pieterskerk, ‘Het Laatste Oordeel’, een drieluik van Lucas van Leyden (1526).
Afgelopen decennia heeft het museum een aantal uitbreidingen gedaan, moderne en historische architectuur. Bepalend is de 19e eeuwse trap uit de Sint Joris doelen, het verenigingsgebouw van de voormalige Leidse schutterij.
Recenter is de enorme moderne uitbreiding, die echter geïnspireerd is op de 17e eeuwse baksteen architectuur. Gehuisvest zijn hier de archieven, opslag, kantoren en restaurant van Museum de Lakenhal.
