On the east side of Dam Square is the obelisk, the Dutch National Monument Amsterdam, which pays tribute to the victims of the Second World War.
Every year on the 4th of May, they are commemorated with a meeting of the King, ministers and local Amsterdammers.
At 8 pm there is a one minute silence across the country.
At the front are four handcuffed male figures that represent misery, resistance and victory.
With howling dogs, representing sorrow and faithfulness.
You can see a central pillar surrounded by various statues and reliefs. Its creator is the sculptor John Rädecker and it was erected in 1956.
In addition to the Nieuwe Kerk, the Bijenkorf, Krasnapolsky and the Royal Palace, the Monument is one of the most important highlights on Dam Square.
