Edam was a prosperous trading port, in the 16th century. Located on the current IJsselmeer, it was the ideal places for the cheese market. Nowadays being held on Wednesdays in July and August.
One of the oldest houses, dating from 1530, in Edam is the leaning warehouse with the stepped gable.
Beautiful sights are its draw-bridges, like the Kwakelbrug, the tea houses and the summerhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Highlights are also the late-Gothic Grote Kerk, the 15th-century town hall and the home for the elderly with it’s beautiful garden.
Once upon a time, Edam was the place where the famous cheese was produced and traded. The cheese is characterised by its round shape, the size of a cannonball. A red or yellow wax layer protects and insulates the soft, tasty cheese.
Edam is also part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. Of strategic, military importance due to its location on the Zuiderzee.

Edam was in de 16e eeuw een welvarende handelshaven. Gelegen aan het huidige IJsselmeer was het de ideale plek voor de kaasmarkt. Tegenwoordig wordt het gehouden op woensdagen in juli en augustus.
Een van de oudste huizen uit 1530 in Edam is het scheve pakhuis met de trapgevel.
Prachtige bezienswaardigheden zijn de ophaalbruggen, zoals de Kwakelbrug, de theehuizen en de zomerhuizen uit de 18e en 19e eeuw.
Hoogtepunten zijn verder de laatgotische Grote Kerk, het 15e-eeuwse stadhuis en het bejaardentehuis met prachtige tuin.
Eens was Edam de plaats waar de beroemde kaas werd geproduceerd en verhandeld. De kaas kenmerkt zich door de ronde vorm ter grootte van een kanonskogel. Een rode of gele wax laag beschermd en isoleert de zachte, smaakvolle kaas.
Edam is ook onderdeel van de Stelling van Amsterdam. Van strategisch, militair belang door de ligging aan de Zuiderzee.
